Throughout the holiday season, your followers are bombarded with information coming from every direction. It seems everyone is vying for their attention, money, and “likes” this time of year–from family and friends to the mega coffee chain down the road. So how do you get over-stimulated, distracted followers to engage?
Don’t shout louder than life, shout with life.
The holidays have a way of opening our eyes to what matters most in our lives: people we love, fond memories, familiar places. We understand you might cringe at the thought of trying to compete with these joys of Christmas, but you also don’t want your followers to forget you.
The key to engaging your followers during the holidays is to compromise. Don’t try to compete with “baby’s first Christmas” or the romantic Christmas Eve proposal. Simply shape your content around what is already on your followers’ hearts and minds. Have a holiday meme-creation contest (bonus points if they create it with a family member), post a holiday-themed “which Christmas movie are you” quiz, or share a funny Christmas lipsync video that you and your team made.

Everyone is laughing over eggnog, singing carols off-key, and having awkward conversations with random relatives because that’s what you do during the holidays. Play off that! Engage your followers in a fun, laid-back way that shows you “get” what’s going on in their lives and applaud their priorities.
Cater to the eyes.
The holidays are a feast for all of the senses, but especially our eyes. This means your followers’ brains are in visual snapshot mode. Long-winded content isn’t going to do as well, emails aren’t going to do as well…you get the picture (pun intended.)
When people hop on their laptop or phone during the holidays, it’s usually somewhere right after dinner and right before the great Settlers of Catan showdown. So you want your content to be as brief and as visual as possible (think live videos, photos, infographics, polls, etc.) If you haven’t been doing so already, now is the time to step-up your visual game.
We hope these tips help you as you engage your followers this holiday season. As always, we’re right here by your side, ready to brainstorm new ideas with you to help you reach your goals–regardless of what time of year it is.
